WATCH: New SPIDER-MAN Director Jon Watts’ Trailer for the Thriller COP CAR Starring Kevin Bacon

Talk about an overnight celebrity. Yesterday news outlets couldn’t spell his name right, today he is the next director for the Spider-Man franchise. Many are curious what in Watts’ resume could possibly have secured the job to bring one of the most popular characters in the world back to the big screen. The answer is a small film called, Cop Car, which has been entertaining audiences on the festival circuit.

The movie is about two juveniles who steal a seemingly abandoned police car and take it for a joy ride. However, little do they know that the cop who owns the car is psychotic and a deadly game of cat and mouse begins. It seems from the trailer that Watts has coaxed good performances out of the young actors, which is not easy to do. It will also be interesting to see how Watts handles perspective in his shooting style, since the protagonists will be so physically overmatched by Kevin Bacon, who seems to be in rare form.

The upcoming reboot of the Spider-Man universe will find Peter Parker in high school again, perhaps for the entire trilogy. Having a director that can believably place the focus of the story on a young lead is paramount for the franchise. If this trailer is any indication, Watts is able to handle youthful discovery, tension, and jump scares in a way that could translate to the next stage of his career. Enjoy the trailer.

Official Synopsis:

Kevin Bacon (“The Following,” HBO’s “Taking Chance,” “Mystic River”) stars in director Jon Watts’ delightful throwback thriller “Cop Car.” When two good-natured but rebellious young boys (James Freedson-Jackson and Hays Wellford) stumble across an abandoned cop car hidden in a secluded glade they decide to take it for a quick joyride. Their bad decision unleashes the ire of the county sheriff (Kevin Bacon) and leads to brutal consequences.

Cop Car opens in theaters on August 7th, 2015.
