A decade ago, networks like HBO, and later on others such as AMC, began to redefine what level of quality people could expect on television. Years ago shows like The Sopranos, The Wire, and Breaking Bad, raised the bar and viewer’s expectations. Now it’s not uncommon to find the best drama and comedy right at home on cable, or on a streaming service.
Netflix has made a rapid ascension from rental service, to a full-fledged operational movie studio in just a few years. They found critical acclaim with shows such as House of Cards and Orange is the New Black. Before expanding even further and partnering with enterprises such as Marvel Studios, to produce some of the best comic book themed shows ever made, in Daredevil and Jessica Jones. Netflix is quickly becoming a safehaven of creative freedom for filmmakers, as the company is developing a reputation for trusting their talent once they go into business with them. This has not only resulted in a high quality of programming, but also is getting the attention of some of the top filmmakers in the industry.
Netflix managed to attract the talents of Baz Luhrmann (Moulin Rouge, The Great Gatsby) to write and produce the new series, The Get Down. Which focuses on the disastrous state of New York in the late 1970’s and how those conditions produced music such as punk, disco, and the beginning of hip-hop, which would transform the world. The cast is a blend of veteran actors and stars of tomorrow, led by Shameik Moore, who blew audiences away as the lead in Dope last year. Also featured in the series is Jimmy Smits, Giancarlo Esposito (Breaking Bad), Jayden Smith (The Pursuit of Happyness), and Justice Smith (Paper Towns). This was a transformational moment in America and it looks as if the series will capture that essence in the upcoming drama. There is not a release date set, but the entire first season will be released at the same time on Netflix, so stay tuned for the details and enjoy the trailer.

The Get Down will be available in 2016.
