One of the most entertaining aspects of The Expendables 3 wasn’t a classic one-liner or explosion, but the performance of Antonio Banderas. Due to his scene-stealing performance, expect a well-deserved career revival for the actor. First up to ride the wave is Millennium Entertainment’s sci-fi thriller, Automata. Banderas plays Jacq Vaucan, an insurance agent who investigates robotics for corporations in the year 2044. He makes a discovery that gets himself entangled in a scenario larger than he could have imagined. It is directed by Gabe Ibanez who has a background in visual effects and is known for his visual flair. Somehow this familiar story looks fresh all over again. Check out the trailer:

In what looks to be a cross between Rise of the Planet of the Apes and District 9, the film looks to be packed full of ideas about self-consciousness and identity. Hopefully, like the two aforementioned movies, this will be a sci-fi gem that no one saw coming. It is just a hunch, but expect this to focus more on it’s ideas, over huge set pieces. Time will tell if Ibanez is able to put a fresh spin on the man versus machine cautionary tale. However, from the looks of the trailer, it is well worth a look.

Automata stars Antonio Banderas, Dylan McDermott (Olympus Has Fallen), Melanie Griffith, Robert Forester (The Descendants) and will be in theaters in limited release October 10th, 2014.
