WATCH: Star-Lord’s Origin from the Upcoming GUARDIANS OF THE GALAXY TV Show

One year ago Marvel Studios shocked the world with the unexpected smash hit Guardians of the Galaxy. The movie based on the previously unpopular comic book, that introduced the world to Drax, Gamora, Groot, Rocket Raccoon, and Star-Lord, stretched the scope of what people can expect from Marvel. Director James Gunn has finished the first draft for Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2 and pre-production is in full-motion as they gear up to shoot the sequel near the end of the year. The next film installment won’t reach theaters until 2017, however Marvel is planning on leaving fans of the franchise something to chew on until then.

This fall Marvel will debut it’s new animated TV show, Guardians of the Galaxy. (Take a look at the teaser.) It will follow the familiar characters from the movie, but this story will not necessarily line up with the Marvel cinematic universe. However, it is clear that it’s more than loosely based on the film. It seems that the creators just wanted to give themselves leeway to tell their own stories. The show features several voice acting veterans including, Will Friedle (Star-Lord), Kevin Michael Richardson (Groot), David Sobolov (Drax), Cree Summer (Nebula), and many more that should elevate the show further.

Up until this point most of Marvel’s animated films and shows have not delivered. While DC is just developing its comic book film universe, they have been upstaging Marvel in the animation department for years. It looks as if Marvel is coming out swinging this time around. Guardians of the Galaxy will be airing on Disney XD, where Star Wars Rebels and Avengers: Earth’s Mightiest Heroes has found success previously. Judging from these two clips, Marvel has upped their game and we might be surprised by the effort they have put into this series.

The two clips fill in unseen parts of Star-Lord’s backstory. It shows his abduction and capture by aliens as a youth and his introduction to Yondu, played by James Arnold Taylor. Even from this small glimpse at the series, it is clear that they have captured the tone and feel of the characters from the movie. It will be even more interesting to see the characterizations of the rest of the Guardians and if they take the time to show each member’s personal history. They each have a tragic story and it seems that the show, while it has a fun tone, is not pulling punches. We will find out in a little over a month. Until then, take an early look at the series.
