A little over a year ago, the CW network announced that it would be doing a spin-off of Arrow called The Flash. The show was based on one of the most recognizable superheroes around, despite the fact that the average person has never picked up an issue of the comic. For those that were familiar with The Flash’s backstory and comic history, it seemed that his colorful comic book world would be hard to adapt for live-action, due to some of the more bizarre characters and far-fetched sci-fi scenarios. However, CW went above and beyond and has crafted one of the most fantastical and entertaining shows on television this season. When it was announced that Supergirl would be getting her own show, many people were cautiously optimistic since we had already seen it work on the CW network.
Supergirl is clearly a push by CBS to cash in on the superhero craze that is proving to be hugely successful on both the big and small screen. Supergirl has been strongly rumored to eventually cross over with The Flash, Arrow, and the upcoming Legends of Tomorrow, all DC Comics’ properties, so there is a lot riding on the show. Melissa Benoist has been cast as Supergirl and is joined by Ally McBeal’s Calista Flockhart, as her domineering boss. It is off-putting how trite the tone of Supergirl seems from the first look. It almost feels as if the show doesn’t take itself seriously because it has a female superhero at its core, which is a little troubling. However, the tone does seem to shift once Benoist is in the trademark costume.
It’s a little bit surprising that they included so much Superman canon. It has been made clear that DC’s film and TV worlds are not based in the same universe, however the inclusion of the Man of Steel raises some interesting questions that will certainly be answered over the course of the first few seasons. Does this mean that Superman is flying around in the background of The Flash and Arrow shows also? Regardless, this trailer signals the next wave of superhero television shows coming this fall. While it does look like a modern remake of Working Girl at some points, perhaps there is more nuance to the show than what is shown. The action looks to be fun as well. Enjoy the trailer.

SUPERGIRL is an action-adventure drama based on the DC Comics character Kara Zor-El (Melissa Benoist), Superman’s (Kal-El) cousin who, after 12 years of keeping her powers a secret on Earth, decides to finally embrace her superhuman abilities and be the hero she was always meant to be. Twelve-year-old Kara escaped the doomed planet Krypton with her parents’ help at the same time as the infant Kal-El. Protected and raised on Earth by her foster family, the Danvers, Kara grew up in the shadow of her foster sister, Alex (Chyler Leigh), and learned to conceal the phenomenal powers she shares with her famous cousin in order to keep her identity a secret. Years later at 24, Kara lives in National City assisting media mogul and fierce taskmaster Cat Grant (Golden Globe Award winner Calista Flockhart), who just hired the Daily Planet’s former photographer, James Olsen (Mehcad Brooks), as her new art director. However, Kara’s days of keeping her talents a secret are over when Hank Henshaw (David Harewood), head of a super-secret agency where her sister also works, enlists her to help them protect the citizens of National City from sinister threats. Though Kara will need to find a way to manage her newfound empowerment with her very human relationships, her heart soars as she takes to the skies as Supergirl to fight crime.
Supergirl will debut this fall on CBS.
