Whether you were ready for it or not, the world’s most famous reptilian siblings are coming back to theaters in a big way in 2016. An already crowded field of summer blockbuster releases just got even more cozy, as the sequel to last year’s reboot of Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles, looks to be the definition of popcorn entertainment.
Paramount Pictures released the first teaser trailer for Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles: Out of the Shadows and it looks as if director David Green (Earth to Echo) is doubling down on the insane fun that is inherent to the franchise. It’s also clear that unlike previous films, Green is adapting primarily the late 1980’s cartoon, which made the property known worldwide.
It’s clear that in the sequel, the aim was to fill out the universe with familiar characters and expand the mythology. One of the Turtles’s most recognizable foes, Rocksteady and Bebop, make their big-screen debut and watching them banter is a long time coming for fans. Also added to the mix is television star Stephen Amell (Arrow), who dons the iconic hockey mask as Casey Jones. Jones is a gritty vigilante who defends his neighborhood with an assortment of sporting equipment and is the love interest for April O’Neill as well.
Maybe the most surprising and spot-on casting is Tyler Perry (Gone Girl) as Baxter Stockman. In the comics and cartoon, he was genius scientist and engineer who designed futuristic technology for TCRI, such as Mousers. It seems that he will be experimenting in mutation in the film as well, as we see he is eagerly behind the creation of Rocksteady and Bebop. Stockman eventually mutates into a grotesque humanoid fly himself, but it’s hard to imagine that they will go that route in the movie. Then again, in the trailer the sky opens up signaling an invasion from another dimension. Which may or may not be led by a talking brain… Anything seems possible in this rebooted TMNT franchise. Enjoy the trailer.
Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles: Out of the Shadows opens on June 3rd, 2016.
