Typically films create a world that you travel and visit with for two hours at a time. However Marvel Studios looked to take the serialized nature of their comic books and translate the storytelling technique to film. The result is a cinematic universe that spans eleven films and over eight years of material to follow along with. It enriches the movie viewing experience because each film builds on the one that came before. However it also takes an increasing amount of concentration and studying to keep up with all of the layers of interconnecting details and characters, within the Marvel Cinematic Universe.

Avengers: Age of Ultron opened today and it will not only put a close to the first two phases of Marvel’s films, but it will also plant the seeds for the next four years of movies. Marvel recently had a 23 hour marathon of all of their films, which led directly into Age of Ultron in Los Angeles. In case you didn’t have that kind of time or ambition, the Verge has made an awesome video that concisely and cleverly gets both new and long-time Marvel fans up to speed, before heading out to watch the next Avengers’ film.
