The beauty of Superbowl Sunday is that audiences are often rewarded with the unexpected and that certainly held true for fans of the Marvel cinematic universe this past weekend. It was assumed that Marvel would drop a new spot for Captain America: Civil War and they did not disappoint. However, the real surprise came with a showdown between the MCU’s tiniest hero against the world’s most feared Avenger.
A one-minute commercial for Coke, served as the platform for an unexpected sequence between Ant-Man and the Hulk during the Superbowl. In the short, Ant-Man sneaks into the laboratory of Dr. Bruce Banner and steals a Coca-Cola out of his refrigerator. Banner notices and transforms into the Hulk while rampaging towards the fleeing Ant-Man.
This is a creative way to market two characters who are in a unique position. The Hulk will be featured in Thor: Ragnarok and in Avengers: Infinity War, however there aren’t any plans for a solo adventure in his near future. Despite the fact that he remains one of the most marketable and recognizable faces in all of movies.
While Paul Rudd had a successful debut in last summer’s Ant-Man, which grossed over $500 million dollars worldwide, the superhero’s profile remains relatively low. Rudd’s Ant-Man has the opportunity to be the comedic relief not only in the sequel, Ant-Man and the Wasp, but also in this summer’s Civil War. So this commercial serves as prime exposure for the character. Get ready for a ride and make sure to drink lots of water! Enjoy!
Official Synopsis:
Two thirsty heroes. Only one Coca-Cola Mini. Witness an epic chase between Marvel’s biggest and smallest Super Heroes: the Incredible Hulk and Astonishing Ant-Man. Despite their differences in size, Hulk and Ant-Man both know what it’s like to get thirsty. But when there’s just one #CokeMini left in the fridge, who will prevail?
Ant-Man will next be seen in Captain America: Civil War opening on May 6th, 2016. While the Hulk will appear in Thor: Ragnarok on November 3rd, 2017.
