After over 70 years of waiting, the world gets its first look at the cinematic interpretation of Wonder Woman. There has been trepidation by studio heads to bring a female superhero to the big screen for decades and with just a tiny bit of footage, we see how foolish the mindset really was.
Last night Warner Bros had a special called DC Presents: Dawn of the Justice League and it premiered the very first footage of the Wonder Woman movie. We get to see Gal Gadot as Diana Prince in a sizzle reel that gives the smallest glimpse at the long-awaited movie. While we still don’t get to hear her speak as Wonder Woman much, we do see how well-suited Gadot is for the physicality of the role, as well as the 1920’s setting. We see both Prince’s reserved alter ego and shots of her on horseback and in combat, that indicate the sprawling canvas of the film coming to theaters next year.
Director Patty Jenkins (Monster) is charged with bringing the comic book icon to life, as well as creating her space within the DC Extended Universe. Wonder Woman is a unique superhero because so much of her back story is intertwined with both comic book lore and Greek mythology. This is what sets her apart from other superheroes. While most superheroes seem god-like, she is literally a god.
From the brief clips and commentary, it really seems that they have come up with a synthesis of the Wonder Woman character that tips the hat to her many different incarnations over the decades. Gadot explained that this is not going to be a surface treatment of the character.
“We are going to see her coming of age, the entire history, what’s her mission,”
Wonder Woman is both a reserved healer and sage, while also being a fierce warrior and champion. It will be interesting to see how they balance out their interpretation of the character, but even from the brief footage shown, it is clear that they get the character.
This is only the very beginning of the Wonder Woman hype. While there has been no official word, it’s hard to imagine that the first teaser trailer won’t be attached to Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice in March. What a time to be a fan of superheroes. Enjoy.
