Last year the first trailer for Avengers: Age of Ultron quickly became a part of pop culture, with its “no strings on me” catchphrase that instantaneously dominated meme generators worldwide. It was the first snowball that triggered an avalanche of excitement for the movie, that didn’t let up until people were watching the sequel the following summer. It seems that history is about to repeat itself as Marvel has released the first trailer for Captain America: Civil War.
It’s interesting that a majority of the trailer takes place in the glaring daylight, which is in stark contrast to the tone and score of the trailer. It’s clear that this is going to be a dark tale and the stakes will be high for Steve Rogers. This might be the most dramatic and foreboding trailer that Marvel Studios has produced. It also is a signal that they are looking to add more gravitas to the MCU, after the popcorn fun of Avengers: Age of Ultron. However, we did also get a very menacing first trailer for Age of Ultron, which ended up being a little misleading when the movie was finally screened. We will see if Marvel takes a risk and continues the trend of more mature storytelling, with more realistic consequences that was established with The Winter Soldier.
The trailer positions Tony Stark as a sympathetic antagonist, who seemingly has the moral high ground. To top it off, he loses a lot within the span of the new footage, so it’s easy to see how audiences may also pull for Stark. It will be a delicate balancing act for the Russo Bros to navigate. That’s probably why this trailer continually reminds the viewer that this is in fact a Captain America story, despite all of the Avengers wall dressings.
The trailer also gave the world its first look at Black Panther, played by Chadwick Boseman. However, it’s questionable why they choose to place the black-costumed hero in the daytime, which draws attention to itself, instead of in the shadows. Another small source of disappointment for big-time Marvel fans will surely be the absence of Tom Holland as the new Spider-Man. However, the absence of other players, such as the Vision and Baron Zemo, suggest that we are mostly getting footage from a few select scenes. With that being said, there is more than enough to get excited about. Enjoy the trailer!
