WATCH: The First Trailer for STAR TREK BEYOND is in Orbit

Star Trek franchise has a tough road ahead of it. Ever since the late 1970’s Star Wars and Star Trek have been in a cold war. Typically passionate fans on both sides of the fence claim the other is too fantasy-driven, too sci-fi, too nerdy, too much canon, and on and on. However, in the past there were television shows which kept Star Trek in the public consciousness. Now there are solely the movies to keep the Enterprise’s mission going and if they don’t live up to expectations, like with Star Trek Into Darkness, the franchise suffers.

In just a few days Star Wars mania will begin and will be an annual event for the foreseeable future. With that in mind, it makes sense why Paramount would choose to release the first trailer for Star Trek Beyond a few days before Star Wars takes over the world. The third installment in the rebooted series has had a series of challenges which complicated its pre-production. However, the word is that there was a prime directive to get a Star Trek movie in theaters for the franchise’s 50th anniversary, by any cost. Actor Simon Pegg co-wrote the script while Fast and the Furious alumni Justin Lin takes over the directing reigns from J.J. Abrams, who is still serving in a producing capacity.

The cast is all back for their third adventure and this time they added Sofia Boutella, who made an impression with audiences in Kingsman: The Secret Service. It seems that she gets to be heroic in her makeup extensive role. Judging from Captain Kirk’s past track record of being open to all species, Boutella will likely be his action-ready love interest. Meanwhile Idris Elba is the movie’s big threat and is unrecognizable beneath his alien makeup as well. However, the character design looks surprisingly cheap and dated.

The first trailer is the exact opposite the apocalyptic tone of the Star Trek Into Darkness trailers, which saw the Enterprise crashing into the Earth. It seems that a concerted effort is being put on highlighting the humor and action in the film, presumably to try and keep up with Marvel’s formula. However, if this is the case when it’s released, Paramount could be biting the hand the feeds them. Star Trek has some of the original fanboys and upsetting their core fanbase further, could prove to be a risky move. There are both reasons for concern and excitement when it comes to Star Trek Beyond. Check out the trailer and judge for yourself.

Star Trek Beyond lands in theaters July 22nd, 2016.
