Last night the world got its first look at the new series, Supergirl. DC Comics continues to expand into the world of live-action and CBS just threw their hat into the ring with the show. While the marketing campaign for the show had a rocky start with an initial trailer, that emphasized the softer side of the show. Things may begin to turn around now that viewers have had the chance to actually watch the show. However like most series, the pilot episode is not always a good indicator of a show’s eventual quality. With that said, the premiere has at least bought some patience from the viewers that tuned in and now CBS wants us to know what to expect next.
Melissa Benoist stars as the title character and her alter ego, Kara Danvers. Most will agree that she was one of the bright spots for the pilot and is well suited to carry the show. There are also questions about the show’s tone and on-the-button meta-humor, which toes the line between camp and comic book fun. However, the show is in the hands of the creators who are bringing some of the most popular comic book properties to TV right now, including Arrow and The Flash. Ali Adler, Greg Berlanti, and Andrew Kreisberg, have proven to make the the most far-fetched concepts digestible and it seems that they want to prove they can do it again.
The action-packed trailer shows off Supergirl’s sense of adventure and scope, while also dropping a bevy of characters and Easter eggs for DC Comics’ fans. The show also has an unique ace up its sleeve by sharing its mythology with Superman. The trailer shows that they won’t be shy to use the vast library of characters and villains that probably won’t ever make it to live-action otherwise. It is still much to early to come to a final judgement on the show, so in the meantime…simply enjoy a peek at what’s to come.
Official Synopsis:
SUPERGIRL is an action-adventure drama based on the DC Comics character Kara Zor-El, Superman’s (Kal-El) cousin who, after 12 years of keeping her powers a secret on Earth, decides to finally embrace her superhuman abilities and be the hero she was always meant to be. Twelve-year-old Kara escaped the doomed planet Krypton with her parents’ help at the same time as the infant Kal-El. Protected and raised on Earth by her foster family, the Danvers, Kara grew up in the shadow of her foster sister, Alex, and learned to conceal the phenomenal powers she shares with her famous cousin in order to keep her identity a secret. Years later at 24, Kara lives in National City assisting media mogul and fierce taskmaster Cat Grant. She works alongside her friend and IT technician Winn Schott and famous photographer James Olsen, who Grant just hired away from the Daily Planet to serve as her new art director. However, Kara’s days of keeping her talents a secret are over when Hank Henshaw, head of a super-secret agency where her sister also works, enlists her to help them protect the citizens of National City from sinister threats. Though Kara will need to find a way to manage her newfound empowerment with her very human relationships, her heart soars as she takes to the skies as Supergirl to fight crime.
Supergirl airs Mondays nights on CBS.
