There has recently been a lot of banter about the amount of reboots happening in the movie industry. In about a ten year span we will be getting our third version of the Spider-Man character. Mad Max: Fury Road successfully rebooted itself after a thirty year hibernation. And Ben Affleck will be the latest actor to pick up the hand-me-down Batman cape and cowl. However, when you think about it, the stuff that is good, is what lasts generations. Stories about Dracula, Tarzan, and Peter Pan, are characters that have been constantly “rebooted” for decades. And that brings us to the newest incarnation of the story about the boy who never grew up, in Pan.
Joe Wright (Atonement, Hanna) directs this latest reinvention of the Peter Pan mythology. In the original Peter Pan book by J.M. Barrie, we are introduced to a Pan that has been living in Neverland for years. The upcoming movie will serve as an origin story, exploring how Peter first found his way to the magical land and how he became the ruler of the Lost Boys. Clearly there will be a lot of twists to the mythology, starting with the future Captain Hook (Garrett Hedlund) seemingly teaming up with Pan against Captain Blackbeard (Hugh Jackman). It looks as if the stage is set for Jackman to steal the show as the flamboyant pirate, as he looks fully invested in his villainous role.
Judging from the trailer, Wright has woven in most of the familiar aspects from the original story, including Tinkerbell, flying pirate ships, Tiger Lily, mermaids, and a lot more. The cast also includes Rooney Mara, Cara Delevingne, and Amanda Seyfried, which is another sign that this could be something special. Hook was a magical film for kids of the 90’s, maybe this will be the Peter Pan film for a new generation of kids. Enjoy!
