There have been a string of movies this year based on centuries old novels such as Pan and Victor Frankenstein, that despite having recognizable names, failed to draw the attention of audiences. The next in line is The Legend of Tarzan and there had been some concern over the lack of promotion for the newest adaptation of the Edgar Rice Burroughs’ book series, considering the movie had finished shooting some time ago. It looks like it’s all under control. The first trailer has been released by Warner Bros and it appears that we are getting a more dynamic Tarzan, than we have ever seen in live-action before.
Alexander Skarsgard inherits the infamous loincloth and looks as if he jumped off of the cover of one of Burroughs’ novels. In this movie, the journey begins once Tarzan has been domesticated and is already a part of society. Eventually a call to action will pull him back into the jungle to reclaim his territory. The plot is vaguely reminiscent of Greystoke: The Legend of Tarzan, however that began with his origin story and development in the jungle, which was the most enjoyable part of the film. Hopefully, they have found an equally engaging way to show how his character came to be in the newest incarnation.
The supporting cast for film is just as impressive as the dynamic action. Margot Robbie (Suicide Squad) continues to pick well-suited roles as she is building the foundation for her future stardom. She hasn’t taken a role lightly yet, so it will be interesting to see what modern spins she puts on the role of Tarzan’s wife, Jane. Christoph Waltz (Spectre) again finds himself in a villainous role and Samuel L. Jackson’s career would not be complete until he screamed “Tarzan!”
Director David Yates (Harry Potter) is at the helm of the new adaptation and it looks like all you could hope for visually, with the benefit of modern filmmaking techniques to expand the canvas. This looks like another fun entry into the crowded summer of 2016. Enjoy.
