WATCH: The Love Child of MAD MAX and MEGA MAN is TURBO KID in the New Trailer

Sometimes a movie comes along that is so bizarre and inspired, that it has to be seen just for the spectacle. The movie’s draw could be due to a new creative concept or visual palette. Other times a filmmaker can create a world that is so well-realized, that it feels as if it has been there forever. The newest trailer for Turbo Kid, shows that if you combine Mad Max, Mega-Man, and some good old-fashioned Grindhouse grit, that you might end up with a totally unique experience.

Turbo Kid’s story follows a young survivor in a post-apocalyptic wasteland, who runs across a crashed ship with an futuristic space suit inside. He then gets the hero’s call to battle an insane tribal leader, while impressing the girl of his dreams. While this doesn’t seem like a terribly original plot, the charm of the film seems to lie in the bizarre retro landscape that the team of three directors, Francois Simard, Anouk Whissell, and Yoann-Karl Whissell, have created. The movie appears like a mash-up of cult elements, which creates something that looks familiar, but is unlike anything we have seen recently.

It is clear that Turbo Kid is inspired by the movies of the 80’s, you can immediately recognize the influence of such cult classics as The Road Warrior and BMX Bandits. What made those films so dynamic was that they were strapped by having low budgets and the limitations forced them to push the boundaries on their stunts…and to be generally outrageous. It’s also hard to not get pulled in by the electronic score, which calls back to synthesized soundtracks from the 80’s. Based on the footage below and early word from the SXSW festival, Turbo Kid looks like a lot of fun. Enjoy the trailer.

Official Synopsis:
