For years studios have been trying to figure out how to reformat the Jaws formula for a new generation. Steven Spielberg’s seminal classic literally wrote the rulebook for summertime thrillers and it continues to be the bar other movies are measured by. This summer season will be particularly crowded and any movie that hopes for success will have to stand out from the pack. Jaume Collet-Serra’s (Run All Night, Non-Stop) upcoming film, The Shallows, may have the right ingredients to attract crowds.
If this trailer is any indication, The Shallows has as good a chance as any film to take the baton. The movie has a simple premise, Blake Lively plays a surfer who survives a shark attack and is stranded on a rock. She is wounded and alone and has to use her wits to outsmart the shark waiting to kill its prey. The story is so simple and primal that it’s hard to imagine it failing, with tension built into its fabric. The first teaser trailer did a good job setting up the premise, while this second look sells the terror that is in store for audiences in June. Enjoy the trailer!
