Peter Pan is back again in the latest reimagining of author J.M. Barrie’s story about the boy who could never grow up. The character is a literary classic, who has been consistently reinvented for almost every generation. A few decades ago there was the Steven Spielberg pseudo-sequel to the book starring Robin Williams, Hook. Decades before that, Disney took the character to its greatest heights with their animated, Peter Pan. In 2015, there will be yet another tale added to the character’s history in the Peter Pan origin story, Pan. 

Joe Wright (Pride & Predjudice, Hanna) directs the prequel tracking the beginnings of all the beloved characters from the novel. Hugh Jackman (The Wolverine) looks to have fully immersed himself into the villainous role of Captain Blackbeard. Peter Pan’s eventual nemesis Captain Hook will have a heroic beginning in this movie and is played by Garrett Hedlund (Tron: Legacy). The casting has left me literally dumbfounded, but I will move on. Rooney Mara plays Tiger Lily, Amanda Seyfried plays Mary, and newcomer Levi Miller will play the lead role of Peter Pan.

It looks like all of the mythology, including pirates battling on ships, mermaids, and the sense of magic, that has made the story endure for over a century is present. However, it doesn’t feel right for some reason. The characterization of Hook doesn’t seem to fit and Hedlund’s line delivery seems hammy at best. Alas, this is just the first trailer, so we will see what more the movie has to offer. Wright has proven to be an outstanding director and the script for the movie was on the Blacklist before finally getting produced. Add to the fact that he was able to assemble an extraordinarily talented cast and all signs point to this being an above average family. We will find out next summer.

Pan will be in theaters July 17th, 2015.
