Sports are thought to be entertainment that takes your mind off of the troubles of the real world. However, there have been multiple times when sports has altered the course of history and humankind itself. The historic image of raised black fists in silent protest at the 1968 Olympics, or the struggles of Muhammad Ali against his own country, are all a part of the fabric and story of America. However, no sports event ever, has been as significant for the U.S, as Jesse Owens and his domination of the 1936 Olympic Games.
Race chronicles the true story of Jesse Owens, one of the fastest men to have ever lived. It’s surprising that this well chronicled story has not received a film to match the stature of the event, but from the looks of the trailer it may have been worth the wait. The film shows how Owens, played by Stephan James (Selma), carried the weight of both black and white America in his effort to achieve Olympic glory.
The 1936 Olympic Games were one of the most significant historic moments in the past century for America and race relations. Adolf Hitler was approaching the height of his powers as World War 2 was imminent. Hitler had boasted about the mental and physiological superiority of the the Aryan race and had intended to prove his theories to the world. James was a standout in last year’s Selma, playing a young John Lewis. It looks as if this movie has the potential to be a star-making vehicle for the young actor. Jason Sudeikis plays his coach and mentor Larry Snyder, in another role that proves that the comedic star has more in his toolbox than simply jokes.
