WATCH: The Punisher Does What He Does Best in DAREDEVIL Season 2 Trailer

Marvel Studios had a lot of successes in 2015, starting with blockbusters at the movie theaters, such as Avengers: Age of Ultron and Ant-Man. However, their most impressive accomplishment may have been to expand their stories beyond the big screen and into your home via Netflix. The new format gave a level of mature sophistication that their tentpole movies lacked and really changed the game for the studio.

We are only weeks away from the second season of Daredevil and after last fall’s Jessica Jones, fans’ expectation levels have shot through the roof and it looks as if the show will not disappoint. The tone of the first season appears to have carried over to the second, which was a genuine concern among some observers. The showrunner for the first season Steven DeKnight, did not return and was replaced by Doug Petrie and Marco Ramirez. However from the looks of the trailer, the show has not missed a beat. The only apparent difference being that the lighting and color scheme seem to be slightly brighter, however the show seems just as gritty as ever.

Charlie Cox is back as Matt Murdock, along with his supporting cast of Foggy Nelson (Elden Henson), Karen Page (Deborah Ann Woll), and Claire Temple (Rosario Dawson). It’s clear that this is no longer a one-man war against crime, as Murdock has the support, both in and out of the costume, of his friends. We also get our first look at Murdock’s old flame, Elektra Natchios played by Elodie Yung, who was merely mentioned during the first season. While it seems that the show will stay within the confines of Hell’s Kitchen, the playground is getting populated with some chrasmatic heavy-hitters that will raise the stakes for Murdock and the show as a whole.

We also get our first in-depth look at Jon Bernthal as Frank Castle, aka the Punisher, and after three movies this depiction of the character looks to be the darkest yet. Bernthal has made comments about the character becoming irredeemable in the eyes of the audience and after seeing the carnage that he causes, it’s clear why it he would be concerned. There doesn’t seem to be any traces of heroism in the character, just an out of control psychopath who must be stopped. It’s fitting since that is essentially how he made his introduction in the pages of Marvel Comics. The freedom given to filmmakers at Netflix allows for a mature and layered storytelling and it looks as if we will be getting a more nuanced characterization of Frank Castle than ever before. We can’t wait to see Daredevil and Punisher’s physical conflict, about their differing ideologies in regards to vigilantism, play out over the 13 episode season.
