The third installment of the newly rebooted Star Trek series has had its challenges getting to the big screen. There were numerous writer and director changes, that at times seemed to threaten the film’s release in 2016, which also coincides with the franchise’s 50th anniversary. Eventually Justin Lin (Fast & Furious) took over the directing reigns, while Simon Pegg moved behind the scenes to co-write the screenplay and the sequel had finally found its footing.
Just when it seemed that the Star Trek ship was sailing in the right direction, they released the first trailer which alarmed long-time fans of the franchise. The trailer featured modern music from The Beastie Boys, as well as dirt bike stunts that belong in the X-Games. The negative buzz spread exponentially and it looked like the series would continue to drift in the wrong direction.
This second look at Star Trek Beyond offers much more of the love of space exploration, character connections, and hope, that series creator Gene Roddenberry founded the franchise on. We get a better look at Idris Elba in his Halloween mask character as the villainous Krall, as well as Sofia Boutella in her second big role after bursting onto the scene in last year’s Kingsman: The Secret Service. The last installment, Star Trek Into Darkness, soured some fans and it looks as if Star Trek Beyond is on the right track for a course correction. With the movie’s release only two months away, this is yet another reason to get excited about the movie season this year. Enjoy the trailer!
