There was a definite resurgence for super spies at the movies this year. In February, Matthew Vaughn tapped into the nostalgia of 1960’s James Bond films while adding a modern sensibility to Kingsman: The Secret Service. It could easily be argued that the drag-racing franchise The Fast and the Furious has morphed into a spy franchise in Furious 7. Then Paul Feig directed Melissa McCarthy and Jason Statham in the aptly titled Spy, which added comedy into the mix. Then Christopher McQuarrie and Tom Cruise showed what a straight-forward modern day spy film looks like with Mission Impossible: Rogue Nation.
Sacha Baron Cohen is looking to throw his hat into the spy ring with the upcoming film, The Brothers Grimsby, which he wrote and also stars in. He is joined by Mark Strong, who plays his long-lost brother Sebastian, a world-class MI6 agent. Cohen plays a slacker who goes off to reunite with his infinitely more capable sibling and together they go on an wild and crazy adventure together….probably.
Cohen has been lying low since 2012’s, The Dictator, while also choosing to stick to more straight-forward roles, as opposed to his shock tactics of the past, like Bruno and Borat. Louis Terrierer (The Incredible Hulk, Catch Me If You Can) is a certified action director and ensures that while there will be comedy, you can expect some blood-pumping action as well. The short teaser showcases some creative sequences, as well as the crass humor that Sacha Baron Cohen is known for. It doesn’t look as strong as some of the other 2015 spy films, but it’s just a brief teaser…so judge for yourself! Enjoy!
Official Synopsis:
Nobby (Sacha Baron Cohen), a sweet but dimwitted English football hooligan, reunites with his long-lost brother Sebastian (Mark Strong), a deadly MI6 agent, to prevent a massive global terror attack and prove that behind every great spy is an embarrassing sibling.
Nobby has everything a man from Grimsby could want, including 11 children and the most gorgeous girlfriend in the northeast of England (Rebel Wilson). There’s only one thing missing: his little brother, Sebastian, who Nobby has spent 28 years searching for after they were separated as kids. Nobby sets off to reunite with Sebastian, unaware that not only is his brother MI6’s deadliest assassin, but he’s just uncovered plans for an imminent global terrorist attack. On the run and wrongfully accused, Sebastian realizes that if he is going to save the world, he will need the help of its biggest idiot.
The Brothers Grimsby opens on February 26th, 2016.
