WATCH: The Teaser Trailer for THE ANGRY BIRDS MOVIE is Nothing to Squawk At

In 2009, Rovio struck gold when they released their game Angry Birds game on smartphones. Several years later the property is a multi-million dollar franchise with multiple spin-offs and tie-ins, endless merchandise, and a new upcoming feature film. The intuitive touchscreen game is popular from toddlers to senior citizens, due to its simplicity, sense of humor, complex yet accessible layout, and addictive design.

The characters of Angry Birds are a huge part of the draw. The birds look straight out of a Nickelodeon cartoon, yet rarely speak or are given the chance to connect with the player. The Angry Birds are essentially the Pac-Man of their time. A completely recognizable brand, without a firm mythology or history attached to it. With this in mind, Sony Pictures acquired the rights to the franchise and now we have the first look at the CGI adaptation of the popular kamikaze birds.

The movie is helmed by first time directors Clay Kaytis and Fergal Reilly, while it was written by Jon Vitti (The Simpsons), a veteran comedy writer and producer. They have assembled a huge comedic cast to bring the birds, and pigs, to life including Jason Sudeikis, Josh Gad, Peter Dinklage, Keegan-Michael Key, and Bill Hader. The look of the game is a natural fit for the big-screen treatment, although it’s yet to be seen if the story will capture the charm and inherent lunacy of the smartphone phenomenon. However, this teaser trailer certainly seems like a great start. Enjoy.

Official Synopsis:

The movie takes us to an island populated entirely by happy, flightless birds – or almost entirely. In this paradise, Red (Jason Sudeikis – We’re the Millers, Horrible Bosses), a bird with a temper problem, speedy Chuck (Josh Gad in his first animated role since Frozen), and the volatile Bomb (Danny McBride – This is the End, Eastbound and Down) have always been outsiders. But when the island is visited by mysterious green piggies, it’s up to these unlikely outcasts to figure out what the pigs are up to.
