WATCH: The Teaser Trailer for the SUICIDE SQUAD Performs a Mic Drop On Comic Con

Since the end of the Christopher Nolan Dark Knight Trilogy, the debate over who is making the better films between Marvel and WB/DC has been admittedly one-sided. It is hard to make a sound defense once the Green Lantern movie is used as evidence. This past weekend at the San Diego Comic Con, director David Ayer confidently grabbed the mic and represented for the DC brand.

The general public was perplexed last year, when Warner Bros announced the follow-up movie to Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice. It wasn’t a solo Batman, Superman, or Wonder Woman movie, which would have been a prudent step. It was literally the goop at the bottom of the barrel, the Suicide Squad. The DC Comics’ team of B and C list villains who are coerced into doing secret missions, for an off-the-grid branch of the government, in exchange for clemency. The movie hit the mainstream radar when it was announced that Harley Quinn, the Joker, and even Batman would make an appearance. Since then it has been hard to imagine this movie failing.

As expected, Ayer brings a gritty, street-level vibe, while still making it seem like this is within the same universe as Dawn of Justice. While we don’t get a sense of the plot, we certainly get a strong sense of the tone and it is hard-hitting. Fans get a glimpse of just about every member that will be featured and no one character is more anticipated than Jared Leto’s Joker.

This version seems very inspired by the recent Tony Daniel’s version of the psychopathic clown, seen in the pages of DC Comics. We have yet to see a Joker this unhinged on film and it will be interesting to see how Ayer also depicts his intellect, which matches his theatricality.

Margot Robbie as Harley Quinn is a ticking legend-bomb waiting to blow up next year. It looks like we will be getting a glimpse of hers and Deadshot’s origins in the movie. This adult take on Quinn will hopefully add layers to character that never existed before.

When you see Will Smith as Deadshot leading the team it just makes sense. They mentioned that they all had special skills, but aside from Harley’s acrobatics, not much is really shown. It will be interesting to see how Ayer handles the action beats in this hyper-realistic world, since the his previous work has been so grounded. Regardless, this is a damn good start. Enjoy!

Suicide Squad opens in theaters on August 6th, 2016.
