Many raised their eyebrows when AMC announced a spin-off to The Walking Dead would be coming to airwaves this fall. Their hit series was going into its sixth season and another show set in the zombie apocalypse felt misguided. After all it would be hard to top the tight story and characters that audiences had grown with over the years on the original show. I mean it can’t get much better than Rick, Daryl, Michonne, and Glenn…can it? It appears that series creator Robert Kirkman won’t be attempting to best his other show in that way. The Walking Dead follows the character’s struggle to survive and maintain their sanity in a violent and unpredictable wasteland. Fear the Walking Dead looks like it will be telling a much different story.
The story is set in LA and follows two families as they witness civilization slowly crumble before their eyes. It looks like a large part of the tension will come from the viewing audience knowing exactly how dangerous the situation is, while characters in the story are experiencing this all for the first time. In addition to the plethora of opportunities to implement creative zombie horror scenarios in the Los Angeles setting. Watching how the average human’s morals change as society and institutions disintegrate, looks to be another interesting aspect of the spin-off. The most important thing is that the trailer established a reason for Fear the Walking Dead to exist and it has the chance to tell a lot of amazing stories that The Walking Dead couldn’t, simply tell because of its time frame.
The new show is buoyed by two strong veteran actors in Kim Dickens (Gone Girl) and Cliff Curtis (Training Day), who will surely be able to carry the emotional weight. This will be a totally different tone and it will be fun to track their character’s growth, much like it was to see Rick slowly loose his grip, as the devastation took his toll on him over the years. However, don’t expect to see the two shows crossover any time soon, as they are separated by time and thousands of miles. It looks like this is another enjoyable chapter in The Walking Dead mythology. Check out the trailer.
