In the 80’s, Marvel, Hasbro and Sunbow Productions teamed up to create much of the classic cartoons from the era, including G.I. Joe and Transformers. Clearly they had dominated both the television and toy markets for boys during the time. However, in 1985 they looked to find a way to appeal to the female market and developed Jem. A superhero styled rockstar that had elements of glam-rock, Barbie, and, futuristic technology. The show centered around Jerrica Benton, aka Jem, and her foster sisters who become the superband, Jem and the Holograms. As the name suggests, Jem is actually a holographic illusion that Benton uses to disguise her true identity. Unfortunately from the looks of the trailer, they have abandoned the science fiction element of the story and with it, the only possible reason to raise an eyebrow.
Jon M. Chu, the director of G.I. Joe: Retalitation, is behind the camera for this film which makes sense when considering the origin of the property. Chu might not be the best director in Hollywood, but he certainly has shown that he is versatile. They also included two female icons from the era, in Molly Ringwald and Juliette Lewis, to add to the nostalgia factor. Also make sure to check out the Black Swan style breakdown. This might be so bad, that it is actually good. Check it out…or don’t.
