The appeal of Tarantino doesn’t necessarily lie in his fancy camera techniques or any kind of attention-grabbing special effects. For over twenty years, he has been able to carry a movie utilizing witty dialogue, with top-notch, if not underappreciated actors. Tarantino has once again dived into his stable of go-to actors, including Samuel L. Jackson, Kurt Russell, Tim Roth, Michael Madsen, and more, to bring his latest vision to life in The Hateful Eight.
If you were following the behind-the-scenes drama, you may know that this movie almost didn’t happen. Tarantino writes all of the scripts to his films and somehow an earlier draft of The Hateful Eight was leaked online. He was so upset, that Tarantino cancelled pre-production on the movie and had decided to move on. However after further thought, he began rewriting the script and staged live reads with most of the assembled film’s cast. Tarantino changed his mind once again and rolled (70mm) cameras. The result is The Hateful Eight.
Tarantino has kept his western motif that he touched on with his last film, Django Unchained. However, it seems that this movie may have more in common with his first film, Reservoir Dogs, which also utilized one primary setting to tell its story. Much like his debut movie, it should be fun trying to figure out which one of these eight scoundrels, will make it out of that cabin alive. Luckily, we will find out next month. Enjoy the trailer!
Official Synopsis:
In THE HATEFUL EIGHT, set six or eight or twelve years after the Civil War, a stagecoach hurtles through the wintry Wyoming landscape. The passengers, bounty hunter John Ruth (Russell) and his fugitive Daisy Domergue (Leigh), race towards the town of Red Rock where Ruth, known in these parts as “The Hangman,” will bring Domergue to justice. Along the road, they encounter two strangers: Major Marquis Warren (Jackson), a black former union soldier turned infamous bounty hunter, and Chris Mannix (Goggins), a southern renegade who claims to be the town’s new Sheriff. Losing their lead on the blizzard, Ruth, Domergue, Warren and Mannix seek refuge at Minnie’s Haberdashery, a stagecoach stopover on a mountain pass. When they arrive at Minnie’s, they are greeted not by the proprietor but by four unfamiliar faces. Bob (Bichir), who’s taking care of Minnie’s while she’s visiting her mother, is holed up with Oswaldo Mobray (Roth), the hangman of Red Rock, cow-puncher Joe Gage (Madsen), and Confederate General Sanford Smithers (Dern). As the storm overtakes the mountainside stopover, our eight travelers come to learn they may not make it to Red Rock after all…
The Hateful Eight opens in limited release on December 25th, 2015, before opening in wide release on January 8th, 2016.
