You may not have realized it, but there is a growing tidal wave of video game adaptations gaining speed and it will be hitting shores over the next few years. In both live-action and the world of animation, expect to see the strings of your childhood nostalgia played, as several of your favorite characters will be on the big screen soon. Next up to bat is Ratchet and Clank.
Ratchet and Clank was a popular video game franchise that first debuted on the Sony Playstation 2 in 2002. The platformer game follows a space feline named Ratchet, who is a mechanic in a world far off. Along with his sentient robot friend Clank, they go on a series of adventures that always had the feel of a Saturday morning cartoon. There was a sharp wit and self-awareness to the game which really helped to set it apart from the pack as well. Judging from the trailer, it seems that same sense of fun has been translated over to the feature film as well. There aren’t many animated franchises set in space and it looks like Ratchet and Clank is at least posititioning itself to trailblaze a few different niche markets.
The most exciting part of the upcoming movie is the talented cast of actors who have been brought together. Paul Giamatti, John Goodman, Rosario Dawson, and Sylvester Stallone, fill out the cast for directors Kevin Munroe and Jerrica Cleland. All of those actors have very distinct voices, which signals that there will be some wacky space creatures in the movie, to match their tones.
While the pressure of carrying the torch for the future of video game movies lies with live-action properties, such as Warcraft and Assassin’s Creed. Ratchet and Clank will be setting the table for what is to come on the animated side, with other projects coming down the pipeline such as Sly Cooper and Super Mario Bros. So this better be good! Enjoy the trailer.
Ratchet and Clank will fly into theaters on April 29th, 2016.
