We are living in era of superhero filmmaking where our imagination is the limit. For the most part, movie studios finally “get” that comic book properties should be treated with respect. Their films are inevitably more successful when the hired filmmakers understand and are passionate about the source material that they are in control of. In the 1990’s the climate certainly was not the same for superhero movies and no project exemplified that more than director Tim Burton’s doomed Superman Lives film.

The film that almost was, has reached legendary status with its inclusion of polar bears, giant mechanical spiders, and Nicholas Cage as Superman. Fortunately one man was bold enough to uncover the bizarre truth behind the freak show that could have been, AMC’s Jon Schnepp. Schnepp was able to secure interviews and behind the scenes looks at the doomed project and the result is his much anticipated documentary, The Death of Superman Lives What Happened? The film features appearances and explanations from all of the power players who were putting the film together, including director Tim Burton, screenwriters Kevin Smith and Dan Gilroy, producer Jon Peters, and many more. It looks like a must-see for any film historian or flat out geek. Enjoy!
