WATCH: The Trailer for the Surprise Sequel 10 CLOVERFIELD LANE is Here!

It’s a rare occurrence to have any genuine surprises at the movie theaters these days. Studios tend to plan their film slate years in advance and every production is covered from script to set visits. So when it was uncovered that a new trailer for a sequel to Cloverfield was recently screened, many (including myself) needed proof that this was not some form of an elaborate hoax. It is not and the movie is very real.

Paramount Pictures just released the first trailer for the top secret sequel, 10 Cloverfield Lane and it looks intriguing. In order to confirm the movie’s legitimacy, producer J.J. Abrams (Star Wars: The Force Awakens) released a statement explaining the curious nature of the film.

“The idea came up a long time ago during production. We wanted to make it a blood relative of Cloverfield. The idea was developed over time. We wanted to hold back the title for as long as possible.”

From the sound of Abrams quote, this new movie is closer to an anthology story set within the Cloverfield universe, than a traditional sequel. Particularly since (spoiler alert), no one from the first movie lived to tell the tale. The sequel is directed by newcomer Dan Trachtenberg, who made a name for himself with the short film, Portal: No Escape. The movie stars John Goodman, Mary Elizabeth Winstead, and John Gallagher, Jr.

The trailer begins with scenes of a typical family night, led by John Goodman, that on the surface seems normal. However. it’s revealed that the family is living in some sort of underground bunker and Mary Elizabeth Winstead’s character is not convinced of the dangers that lurk outside. It’s worth noting that the movie is shot traditionally and not in the same found footage style of the first film. The sequel also seems to have more elements of a psychological thriller, than a typical monster movie. While Goodman’s character appears wholesome initially, it is quickly apparent that the dangers outside of their bunker aren’t the only things to be feared in the movie. Enjoy the trailer.

10 Cloverfield Lane opens on March 11th, 2016.
