Before the Mighty Morphin Power Rangers became the most popular teenagers in multi-colored spandex suits in the 1990’s, there was Voltron. The animated smash hit followed five astronauts who pilot robotic lions, who combine to form the intergalactic warrior, Voltron. The series that began in 1984, is coming back to television screens this summer via Netflix.
The network that continues to make dreams come true, is at it again. The streaming service won’t settle at simply bringing geek properties ranging from Danger Mouse to Marvel’s Iron Fist to their schedule. They have decided to dig deep into the recesses of their fan’s nostalgia banks and bring one of the most beloved properties from the 80’s back to life, with Voltron: Legendary Defender. In partnership with Dreamworks Animation, the series will premiere this June with an hour long debut and ten subsequent 22-minute episodes all available at the push of a button. (And a monthly subscription to Netflix…)
There is a lot to like about the upcoming series. It is produced by Joaquim Dos Santos and Lauren Montgomery, whose work on Avatar: Legend of Korra has set the bar for modern animated programming, in terms of both the quality of animation and the sophisticated level of storytelling. Fans of The Walking Dead certainly will be excited to learn actor Steven Yuen will be piloting the red lion as Keith as well. Here is the complete voice cast for Voltron: Legendary Defender.
• Princess Allura – Kimberly Brooks (Ben 10: Omniverse, Justice League: War)
• Coran, the chief advisor to the princess – Rhys Darby (What We Do in the Shadows, Flight of the Conchords)
• Shiro, Black Lion pilot – Josh Keaton (Green Lantern: The Animated Series, Transformers Prime)
• Hunk, Yellow Lion pilot – Tyler Labine (Reaper, Tucker & Dale vs. Evil)
• Lance, Blue Lion pilot – Jeremy Shada (Finn in Adventure Time, Batman: The Brave and the Bold)
• Pidge, Green Lion pilot – Bex Taylor-Klaus (Arrow, Scream: The Series, iZombie)
• Keith, Red Lion pilot – Steven Yeun (The Walking Dead, The Legend of Korra)
Fans of the original series should recognize that most of the iconic characters from the original have made the leap to the modern version. The only thing more exciting than this series would be getting an announcement that a live-action version is happening. Is this series testing the property’s viability for a movie studio? It’s very possible. Check out the trailer. Enjoy!
