Will Ferrell’s formula for making comedies is undoubtedly predictable, but comforting for ticket-buyers who want a few guaranteed laughs. His films usually have a simple set-up that typically have to do with a man-child that is in an uncomfortable situation or arena, that he is ill equipped to handle. In addition, Ferrell often pairs himself up with an acting foil to bounce his comedic stylings off of. Well it seems that he is up to his usual hijinx in his newest offering.
Just in time for Father’s Day is the trailer for Ferrell’s latest comedy, Daddy’s Home. He reteams with his co-star from The Other Guys, Mark Wahlberg, in the upcoming film about a docile stepfather (Ferrell) whose world is turned upside down, when the charismatic father (Wahlberg) comes back into the picture. It looks like another Saturday Night Live skit stretched into feature film length, propped up by Ferrell’s unique brand of humor. It is directed by Sean Anders and John Morris, the writers behind We’re the Millers and Hot Tub Time Machine, who filled out the supporting cast with up and coming comedians to support Ferrell’s improvisational style. Check out the trailer.
The trailer does seem a little bit tame, but that could simply be due to the film still being over six months from release. Could this be the movie that Ferrell finally loses his box-office mojo? It is unlikely, due to the addition of Wahlberg who has another successful comedy franchise under his belt with Ted and the upcoming Ted 2. That doesn’t change the fact that Ferrell is edging dangerously close to becoming a parody of himself, much like Adam Sandler has, by not stretching his acting range in recent years. We will find out this winter.
Daddy’s Home opens in theaters on December 25th, 2015.
