Every major actor and actress is already in or being pursued for a major comic book franchise. There have been rumors that Chris Pine is considering playing Steve Trevor in Wonder Woman, last year Chiwetel Ejiofor was rumored to have flirted with joining Doctor Strange, while Margot Robbie is currently shooting Suicide Squad and on her way to becoming a star as Harley Quinn. Well you can’t have superhero action all the time, so the three settled on a quiet dramatic thriller…set in an apocalyptic future. 

Z For Zachariah is adapted from Robert C. O’Brien’s 1974 novel of the same name about Ann Burden, seemingly the last woman on Earth. Her entire world changes when she saves a scientist from his certain doom. The story is cerebral and intimate, however grows increasingly tense as there are several twists and reveals that keep ratcheting up the tension, for this post-apocalyptic love triangle.

Robbie has a string of films lined up after blazing onto the scene in Martin Scorsese’s The Wolf of Wall Street, however she has not yet gotten the opportunity to show her range. Playing Burden should give audiences a different look at Robbie, since this character spends a lot of time isolated and simply surviving. Which contrasts with her previous role and certainly from her upcoming portrayal of Harley Quinn. It will be interesting to see her chops up against Ejiofor and Pine, after successfully carrying a movie with Will Smith in Focus. The movie has already gotten favorable reviews in its limited screenings and while it is certainly not blockbuster, it does appear to be a memorable film on its on merit. Z For Zachariah opens in theaters on August 21st, 2015.
