When Guardians of the Galaxy hit theaters this past summer there was a wave of excitement over the new Marvel property. Then there was a silence. Almost like that same wave retreated along with the tide, back out to sea. Don’t look back now because the tsunami of Guardians of the Galaxy merchandising is about to hit the shore. What began as innocuous dancing baby Groot toy, will manifest into lunchboxes, backpacks, video games and of course an animated TV show.
A New York Times article details the approach to the animated adaptation:
Stephen Wacker, Marvel’s vice president for current animation, emphasized in an interview that the series would strive to replicate the movie’s offbeat sense of humor. The show’s plot, he said, would pick up where the movie left off. The purple-skinned Thanos, a Marvel supervillain, will figure prominently.
“This is a new look for us,” he said. “We’ve learned what works on TV and what doesn’t.”
One lesson is “not to underestimate the audience,” Mr. Wacker said. “You can’t be afraid to go deeper, to explore stories and characters with some depth. This audience may be young, but it can spot a stinker a mile away.”
It is relatively surprising that they are picking up directly were the feature film ended off. While there isn’t a mention of a direct connection between the animated and feature films, there undoubtedly will be. This is a Marvel produced show, at the very least they could be simply testing the waters and introducing new characters for audiences to become familiar with. The second point of interest, or point of geek if you will, is that it seems they are looking to employ mature storytelling. This show will air on Disney XD and maybe they have learned from shows as, Star Wars: Clone Wars and The Legend of Korra, that great animation with solid writing will attract younger and older viewers alike.
Check out Marvel’s early test footage for the show:
It looks as if the show will be a blend of CGI and 2D animation, giving the show a slick and futuristic feel. The clip is short, but does well to capture the tone. It will be hard to not give this show a shot, especially with the heavy inclusion of Thanos and the mythology of the movie held intact.
Guardians of the Galaxy TV show is coming to Disney XD in 2015.
