Little orphan Annie is back in the newest adaptation of the classic Broadway musical. The play itself was an adaptation of the comic strip Little Orphan Annie, created by Harold Gray. The fact that Annie is technically a comic character, qualifies her for Point of Geek glory…barely…Anyways, here we go…

This is the second theatrical film incarnation of the property. It is produced by James Lassiter, Will Smith, Jada Pinkett-Smith, and Jay Z, among others. Jay Z is actually credited with bringing the character back to prominence with his rendition of the classic Annie song, “It’s a Hard Knock Life.”

The story is being brought into modern New York with all the flair and political correctness you can imagine. Look no further than Jamie Foxx’s character’s name being changed from Daddy Warbucks to Will Stacks. Annie is played by the extrodinarily gifted, Quvenzhané Wallis (12 Years A Slave), who is the youngest actress to ever be nominated for an Academy Award for best actress, for her work in Beasts of the Southern Wild. It’s hard to imagine a better fit for the role. The supporting cast is solid and is rounded out with Cameron Diaz (Bad Teacher), Rose Byrne (Neighbors) and Bobby Cannavale (Chef) among others.

A Broadway classic that has delighted audiences for generations comes to the big screen with a new, contemporary vision in Columbia Pictures’ comedy, “Annie.” Academy Award nominee Quvenzhané Wallis (“Beasts of the Southern Wild”) stars as Annie, a young, happy foster kid who’s also tough enough to make her way on the streets of New York in 2014. Originally left by her parents as a baby with the promise that they’d be back for her someday, it’s been a hard knock life ever since with her mean foster mom Miss Hannigan (Cameron Diaz). But everything’s about to change when the hard-nosed tycoon and New York mayoral candidate Will Stacks (Jamie Foxx) – advised by his brilliant VP, Grace (Rose Byrne) and his shrewd and scheming campaign advisor, Guy (Bobby Cannavale) – makes a thinly-veiled campaign move and takes her in. Stacks believes he’s her guardian angel, but Annie’s self-assured nature and bright, sun-will-come-out-tomorrow outlook on life just might mean it’s the other way around.

Annie will be in theaters on December 19th, 2014.
