Since the moment that Jason Momoa was revealed as the new face of Aquaman for DC Films, it was clear that there would be a new definition of the character and his world. The character made a brief cameo in last year’s Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice and will have a key role in next year’s Justice League. In that movie, the world will get their first introduction his Atlantean partner, Mera.

Amber Heard was cast as Mera in Justice League, in presumably a small role, before taking on a larger role in the Aquaman solo film. This morning IGN exclusively released the first look at Heard in costume during filming for the movie, with a picture taken by director Zack Snyder.

The costume should bring to mind the Atlantean armor that Momoa wears, which should give cohesion and acclimate viewers to the underwater world of Atlantis. In the comics, Mera is Aquaman’s true love and a great warrior in her own right. She also possess the ability to control and manipulate water.

IGN also provided first looks at the concept art that went into creating the look of the character. It’s hard to imagine that Heard has a large role in Justice League, but her along with William Dafoe as Vulko, should give audiences a good glimpse into the underwater world and politics of Aquaman’s homeworld.

 

While this first photo should be of interest to fans, it’s even more fun to think about what director James Wan (The Conjuring 2) has in store for the Aquaman solo film. Snyder is creating the foundation for Atlantis, while Wan will have the opportunity to truly bring it to life. 

There is still over a year to go until the release of the Justice League. This is just the primary reveal of Mera and perhaps we could get a glimpse of her in a future trailer for the event film. It seems that the scope of the upcoming event film is huge and hopefully it’s not overstuffed. With so much info on the movie already, it’s easy to forget that its release is still over a year away. There is surely much more to come. 

Justice League opens on November 17th, 2017.
