Okay, enough is enough. Suicide Squad is turning out to be an embarrassment of riches. Warner Bros is literally throwing the kitchen sink at the new film already starring Will Smith and Jared Leto, as Deadshot and the Joker respectively. They have filled out the supporting cast with a host of memorable names and faces of both Hollywood and the pages of DC Comics. They include Viola Davis (Amanda Waller), Joel Kinnaman (Rick Flagg), Jai Courtney (Captain Boomerang), and Adewale Akinuoye-Agbaje (Killer Croc), as well as rumored cameos from Jesse Eisenberg (Lex Luthor) and Ben Affleck (Batman), and that is just the tip of the iceberg.
While the cast is extraordinarily crowded, most are assuming that many of the parts are simply glorified cameos. Suicide Squad comes five months after the debut of Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice, where the primary heroic icons such as Superman, Batman, and Wonder Woman, will be established, which will set the stage for WB’s upcoming DC Comics’ cinematic universe. All the members of the Justice League will get solo spin-off films after their introduction and they will presumably face-off against some of the villains established in Suicide Squad. That hasn’t stopped WB and director David Ayer from adding yet another talented actor to the film. Oscar winning rapper and actor Common has joined the comic book insanity that has already begun filming.
It was reported by THR that the actor has signed on in an unspecified role. There are several roles from the DC Universe that Common would be able to convincingly portray. In fact, he was already cast as John Stewart/Green Lantern by director George Miller (Mad Max: Fury Road) in Warner Bros last attempt to bring the the Justice League to the big screen, in Justice League: Mortal. Clearly the project didn’t make it to film, but the actor did get to wet his appetite. This is what he recently had to say about the defunct project to ScreenRant.
John Stewart is from Detroit, so he was this guy that was really for the community, and I really related to that. He used his powers to help people in the community. I was like, ‘Man, I’m going to be John Stewart, the Green Lantern!’ Unfortunately, it didn’t happen at that time. But maybe the possibility is that it could. I would love to.
It isn’t likely that he has been recast as Stewart, especially because it is hard to see how he would fit into the landscape of the Suicide Squad. However, there are still many notable villains of the Suicide Squad in the comics, that still haven’t been mentioned as part of the film.
Former members Bronze Tiger and Black Spider are strong possibilities for the actor to portray. Common’s star has been on the rise and WB could be trying to lock him in for the future. If that is the case, a role as Aquaman’s nemesis Black Manta makes a lot of sense. There have even been rumors that Amanda Waller will be in possession of the King of Atlantis’ magical trident, which could serve as motivation for the underwater villain. In any case, Suicide Squad is already shooting so it shouldn’t be long before Common’s role is uncovered.
Suicide Squad shoots up theaters on August 5th, 2016.
